I Had a Bad Experience

I just want to start off by saying how touched I am by all of you who read my blog. Thank you for all your prayers and kind words. I’m feeling better today. I should be getting more answers next week regarding the tests I had yesterday.

Dr. R is a gastroenterologist who was performing the two tests yesterday which were an esophagogastroduodensocopy (EGD) and a colonoscopy. These are not fun test but they’re not the worse test that there are. I know about bad tests, my husband had gone through some really nasty ones. So I wasn’t worried, they give you good drugs and you’re totally out of it during the procedure.

What the doctor found was that I have an infection in my esophagus, which is treatable by medication. My stomach is quite red and inflamed and he took a sample and a few more samples from my colon and will get back to me with the results.

I like to revisit the part about staying asleep during the test. I did not. Waking up during a colonoscopy is an experience I wouldn’t anyone to go through. But when I did, I was quite frighten and in pain. I started to cry out. I heard Dr. R. say, “Oh stop it now, don’t be a baby, you’re alright.” That’s right. He said that. The next thing I remember is seeing Tom. He kept saying, “What’s the matter, honey?” I was crying.

I don’t complain about pain. The nurse that put the IV into my hand didn’t do a good job and I knew it would leave a bruise (which it did). The nurse who placed the blood pressure cuff on my arm did so in such a matter that it left marks on my arm. I didn’t say anything. Excuse me if during a very unpleasant test I wake up and cry out in pain, because I’m first confused by what’s going on and I’m on drugs.

Today, as I examine what happened, I’m grateful for one thing – my husband. I would not have made it without him. When I saw his face I felt safe and protected. He was there for me and took great care of me when I got home. I’m truly blessed to have him. Thank you babe, you’re the best.

I extend forgiveness to Dr. R for his unprofessional remarks to a patient who was scared and vulnerable.

Thank you all again for your love and prayers. I’ll be back visiting as many blogs as I can.

My husband started a new series of messages based on a message he preached that is truly excellent. Do yourself a favor and head over to his blog to read it.

Well, first of all, I am so glad that you are feeling better!
But what a horrible ordeal to have to go through...the test is bad enough, I'm sure, but then to wake up in the middle of it and be frightened and in pain...and then have a doctor with no bedside manner! I'm so sorry you had to go through that!
I'll continue to pray for you...and I'll check out your husband's blog, too!
Blessings!

You have my sympathy. I personally would've said something to the doctor (later, either in person or via a letter). I recall Dear Hubby's cardiac surgeon referring to his condition (coronary artery disease which necessitated a triple-bypass) as a "terminal illness." :-O Silly me, here I was thinking of it in terms of being a manageable condition (I still do, actually).

It's great that you're quick to forgive, though. In general, it takes me a bit longer, but I'm working on it! You're a terrific example.

God bless you through this. I've had experiences with doctors who were less than kind but I've also known plenty who were caring and loving. I'm sorry you got the former. I hope the tests turn out OK and I hope your husband is doing well also. I'm praying for you guys!

Nadine,
Im sorry to hear about your experience. It sounds like you were quite brave, and the doctor lacked a considerable amount of compassion. A lot of people avoid getting tested and going to the doctor because of the pain and the way they are treated. I am soo glad that your husband was there with you during this. Otherwise it sounds like it would have been quite unendurable. Heal up, and let us know what you continue to find out.

Don't think too much about the doctor, he's not worth it. They must not have taught him people management at med school. It's important that you're doing better and that they found out what's wrong.

HUGS!

Wow - not fun! I'm thankful that my daughter (age 16) had a good colonsocopy experience, especially since she has to keep having them every six years. I'm glad you are feeling better.

Clearly, that Dr. missed the class on "social skills!" How inappropriate...how unnecessary! Still, I am impressed by YOUR attitude! By your re-action...to his action.

Who said that while we cannot control what happens to us in life...but we control 100% of our reactions? Whoever said that would be honored to know you!

Geesh!

I'm so glad that you saw your husband...and felt instant relief and peace. WTG hubby!

God bless you my new blogging friend!

I'm so happy to feel you're feeling better. Stomach trouble is no fun at all. I had Crohn's for 2 years and went through all those nasty tests. They also told me I would sleep right through my colonoscopy, but the anesthetic didn't work and I had to be awake for the whole thing. It was so traumatic that I shudder at the word "colonoscopy". So I'm feeling your pain. I can't believe the doctor was so cold! I wonder how many gastroenterologists have had colonoscopies? That should be part of their training. Give them some empathy for their patients. God bless you. Recover quickly!!!

Oh, golly. That was pretty unprofessional and even downright rude. I'm glad you're doing better, and that you've gotten answers from the other tests.

I haven't had to have a colonoscopy yet but I will in a few years and I am dreading it soooo much! I don't think there's any such thing as a pleasant medical exam but a colonoscopy just sounds horrible! I am sorry you had a difficult time with it. I hope all your testing is over soon. God bless!

Oh my goodness. I can't even begin to imagine the horrible pain. I feel for you. Sometimes don't you wish you could chase an insensitive Dr. around with a foot long needle and syringe? ha!
