Guilty Pleasure

I am the first to admit that there are some shows I like to call “guilty pleasures.” Why do I call them that? Well, it’s because they may not be the “best” thing on television but I find pleasure in watching it anyway. One of those shows to my surprise is called, Drop Dead Diva. The premise is dumb and the acting is less than stellar but I find enjoyment in it anyway. The show is about a plus size lawyer who dies and goes to heaven the same time that a pretty blonde model does. The model pushes a button to go back to earth and ends up in the body of the plus size lawyer. She retains her memories but is now suddenly very smart. I told you it was a dumb premise.

This past week the show was about the lawyer going into a fancy boutique to buy a dress she saw advertised. The problem came when the store didn’t carry anything above a size 10. She was treated “less than” because of her size and asked to leave. Being a lawyer she naturally sued them.

It reminded me of something that happened when I my daughter was visiting. We went to the mall. I was wearing my Wal-Mart special jeans, shirt and sneakers. My hair was up and I had very little make-up. I was comfortable. We were in Lord & Taylor. We passed by the fur coat area and I walked in to take a better look. A man came out from the back, took one look at me and when right back from which he came. I remembered feeling “less than.” I so wanted to have a Pretty Woman moment. I wanted to go buy a very expensive fur coat somewhere else, come back and let that man know he “blew it.”

Maybe I like the show because I have had a problem with my weight my whole life. There have been times when I was thin but mostly I shop in that “plus size” section of the store.

Whether I lose weight or not doesn’t matter. What matters is - do I feel good about who I am as a person? Am I less intelligent because of the section of the store I shop? Am I nicer? Am I less than because I can’t afford a fur coat? No. Hey, don’t get me wrong I would love to lose weight and afford that fur coat. But this I know, neither one defines who I am. I have a man who loves me and tells me everyday I am beautiful. That is worth more than money or a size 10 pair of jeans.

This particular guilty pleasure allowed me to take a look at myself and realize that I like me. I am blessed. How many guilty pleasures can you say that about?

Nadine,
You are beautiful. Tom is right. He has good taste. Courageous blog you wrote. Many can identify with this one. Did you ever read Max Lucado's children's book "You Are Special." It's the best portrayal of God's unconditional love. He made us, He likes us, He wants to spend time with us. We are not our behavior, or our weight, or our possessions. We are loved because we are His Beloved. Glad you're back up and blogging. <3 you.

Tom Zawacki is the sweetest man around :)

I've watched that show once and I liked it too. I just don't know what night of the week it comes on though.

My guilty pleasure is Project Runway. I don't care a fig about wearing fancy clothes, I have no style nor can I sew. WHY do I adore that show so much?!!

Well said Nadine and yes, the man just like many many other sales personnel judge a person by the first impression.

You are special in your own special way Nadine and we love you no matter what size you are ;)

I'm so glad you came to realize just how special and how beautiful you are. My husband is of the same suit and even though my problem, more than weight, has been the effects of my health on our activities and my looks due to the wear on my body and skin, he still loves me, just me and all of me just the way I am. Can't get any better than that!
You GO Tom!!
You GO Nadine!

Hi Nadine!
Gosh, I loved this post! You tell them, girlfriend!! You have a lot of blessings that those snooty sales-types do not! Besides, you were s-h-o-p-p-i-n-g in the store ~ they were w-o-r-k-i-n-g there! I just think if it weren't for people shopping, they would be out of a job. I love that scene in Pretty Woman when she goes back to the shop and tells that clerk she made a big mistake! Vindication for all ladies!!
Lots of Hugs, Bebe :)

P.S. Giggling at Tom's comment...you are REALLY blessed! :)

Oh Nadine, I love this post! I know I'm thin now, but as a child eating Spanish omelets with Spanish sausages and potatoes (and lots of ketchup, of course) AND red wine (diluted w/ water) for brunch, I was a chubby little thing. I hated it but everyone else in my family thought I looked "healthy." Imagine that.

Anyway, that show sounds like a hoot. I'll have to check it out! Thanks for sharing and I love the message that goes with this post! You rock, Chica!!!

I am going to have to check this show out.

I have had the same experience you have had in NYC with my mom once. I had a doctor appt. and we went to stop in one of those boutiques where they unlock the door to let you in and they were looking at us like "why are you trying to come in here?" then a limo pulls up and a lady gets out and they open right up for her, Of course we followed her right in just to check the place out. Geez how nice is that? Anyway I, like you, would love to drop some weight, and I also wear my comfortable clothes most of the time. My hubby calls them cute. I'm sure the store you went into would find them totally unflattering and not cute at all.

PS great comment from your super cool hubby. Now that is all you have to care about.

You cannot say that about many guilty pleasures!

Glad you were able to take so much from it.
